Whats wrong with the 95 chrysler lebaron enginge not starting and having fast clicks?

On the firewall behind the alternator, white smoke came out and now there is a line of brown mark on the firewall. When I have the battery cables connected in the car where the glove box is a fast multiple click happen, the temperature gauge goes past the highest mark and nothing else works. Messing with knobs and switches and nothing happens; i put the key in and turn it forward and the gauges go back to normal and no more clicking sound but the wireless remote wont work, so when i hit the unlock button nothing happens so the killswitch doesnt unlock for me to turn the enginge. I put in a new starter and everything is still happening the same just the clicking sounds is under by the pedals this time.... what else can be wrong?
