Should I read the intro for 'Log from the Sea of Cortez' (Steinbeck)?

I have an edition of John Steinbeck's 'The Log from the Sea of Cortez' that includes "About Ed Ricketts" and "Introduction" sections before the actual book/log part starts. Should I read them before or go back after I read the book so it won't be spoiled?
